Did you know that the city of Sakai in Osaka is the birthplace of Japan’s modern tea ceremony culture? The Sakai Plaza of Rikyu and Akiko is the premier location to dive into and experience Japanese tea ceremony.
On June 9, 2024, the Plaza is hosting a diversity-themed farmer’s market with rainbow flags, merchandise, and workshops. The event will have a fashion show and talk show featuring both LGBTQ+ and ally models in collaboration with Kansai ALLYMO, a local fashion collective dedicated to promoting allyship for the LGBTQ+ community.
Special just for Pride month, the Sakai Plaza has also crafted a rainbow-colored Japanese sweet titled Kibou (“Hope”) to serve during standing tea ceremonies. These are only available for a limited time, so take advantage of the farmer’s market on June 9 to experience the origins of Japan’s tea ceremony culture!
